Aquanatal Exercise combines the relaxing weightless effect of being in water with a fun exercise class tailored for Mums-to-be.

Aqua4mums antenatal class is a 45-60 minutes fun, physio-led exercise class that’s packed full of the best bits of yoga, pilates, tai chi and aquafit and combine to stretch and exercise every conceiveable part of your body, even the bathroom muscles!!

The weightless ‘floaty’ feeling that you get in the pool is magic, and even at 41 ½ weeks you’d be forgiven for feeling ‘not really pregnant at all’ and capable of ‘giving it socks’ as you only weigh 25% of normal which reduces pressure on joints!

While exercise and fitness is important, and highly recommended (Canadian Guidelines-HERE), preparing your mind and body for birth is also a key part of the class.  Breathing, relaxation and pelvic floor opening and strengthening exercises are always practiced.

Advice and information is woven into every class.  As physios we are uniquely able to adapt, change and advise all our clients on any difficulties or differences they arrive to class with!

Why Water Works?

  • The unique buoyancy of water supports your body, lifts your limbs and allows easy three dimensional movement.  This means you can do aquanatal to the very end of your pregnancy, in fact you feel better and better in the water as your pregnancy develops!

  • The turbulence and viscosity of water creates resistance to your movement which strengthening your muscles, but also makes your core work hard just to stay still!

  • It’s 9 times harder to move through water than through air, so although you’re light in the pool, you’re working hard.
  • The hydrostatic pressure in water squeezes in on your body reducing swelling in your hands, ankles, feet and improves your circulation throughout your body.

  • The warmth of water naturally eases your aches and pains, reduces stress on your back, pelvis and hips and helps improve your flexibility.

Why Aquanatal?

  • Unlike general aqua aerobics class, Aquanatal is tailormade for pregnant women and offers the opportunity to exercise safely with a physiotherapist, particularly during the later stages of pregnancy (16-41 weeks!)

  • Gentle fitness training is also included in the class: some studies have shown that fit women may have shorter labours and will more easily regain normal shape after birth.

  • Weightless Aquanatal Exercise is extremely beneficial for pregnant women troubled with Back Pain and Pelvic Girdle Pain.

  • It complements prenatal Yoga and prenatal Pilates very well, being a lot more active and fun(!) but still using those core muscles in a different way.

  • Educational tips are woven through the class to help with posture, back care, pelvic floor muscles, breathing practice, relaxation and caring for you and your baby when it arrives.
